Imphal, March 20:
Even as the All Tribal Students' Union, Manipur has called off its economic blockade from today, the Meetei Eron Eyek Loinasinlon Apunba Lup (MEELAL) today announced that it will go ahead with its economic blockade as announced earlier from midnight of March 23.In a statement issued to the press, MEELAL said that the blockade will be launched in accordance with its stand earlier that it take up such recourse if the ongoing Assembly session fails to take a resolution to implement Meetei Mayek from this year onwards.
The agitation will be launched in co-operation with the people from the hills, said MEELAL and added that though the State Government had adopted the 27 letter script in 1979 during the time of the late Yangmasho Shaiza and a Gazette to this effect was issued in 1980, nothing concrete has been done by successive Governments.
For over 200 years, the people have had to depend on the Benglai script, though Manipuris have their own script, said the statement and added that since the agitation started on February 10, over 20 lakh Manipuri books written in Bengali script have been burnt while over 400 MEELAL activists, mostly women have been sent to jail.
