The mortal remains of the Tangkhul girl, who was stabbed to death by a mentally deranged man at Mumbai yesterday, will be brought back to her home at Leiyainaotang in Ukhrul district Hqs tomorrow.
The slain girl has been identified as Leishichon Shaiza (23) daughter of Lengchen Shaiza while her friend who has been admitted to the hospital in critical condition is identified as Ngahuimi Raleng (20) daughter of Chihanpam Raleng.
The assailant has been identified as Juner Patel.
The two girls were attacked by the man while they were shooting with a handycam and feeding the pigeons at the Gateway of India yesterday at about 5.45 pm.
Leishichon died at the spot while her friend who had rushed in to rescue her was severely hurt when the assailant attacked her with a butcher's knife.
She is presently undergoing treatment at GT Hospital, Mumbai.
The Naga Fellowship Services and Naga Students' Union, Mumbai held a condolence meeting at Mumbai today.
The police immediately arrested the assailant and a case has been registered at the Colaba Police Station.
The DCP of Mumbai police has intimated the matter to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Delhi yesterday evening itself.
Meanwhile the Naga Students' Federation and the All Naga Students' Association, Manipur have strongly condemned the killing of the girl.
In a joint statement, the student bodies demanded a judicial inquiry into the matter.
The Maharastra Government should also compensate for the unprecedented murder of the girl and injury caused to another, demanded the student bodies.
Agencies add: The attacker, 27-year-old Juner Patel, is believed to be mentally unstable.
He has been remanded to police custody till August 28.The girls were out at the Gateway when Patel came from behind and slit the throat of one of the girls.
"Suddenly this man pulled out a knife, caught hold of the girl and slit her throat.
Her friend saw that and called out for help," said Eshwar Dalvi, an eyewitness.
Her friend who tried to intervene when Patel was stabbing Leishichon, was injured and has been admitted to Mumbai's G T Hospital.
"She came to Mumbai on July 27.She had come to visit me and I told her that if she liked the city, we could look for a job for her," said Leishichon's cousin Sleshishina Unshi.
Patel was immediately arrested after the attack.
Police say he seems to be mentally unstable.
"The man seems unstable.
Earlier in the day, he had stabbed his father who is recovering in the hospital," Said SP Yadav, Additional Commissioner of Police.
The incident evoked a mixed response in the city.
Some people were frightened, while others seemed not as affected.
"If something like this happens it is certainly scary.
It can happen to anybody in broad daylight.
It is an unfortunate incident," said a local.
"I saw this on television and came here.
These things keep happening in Mumbai.
But people here are very strong.
Such things don't affect them," said another local.
The incident has sent Shockwaves in the neighbourhood and took place at a time when not just foreign tourists, but also the people of the city were out for a stroll at the Gateway.
